A recent clinical trial has highlighted the cognitive benefits of whey protein powder enriched with milk fat globule membrane (MFGM), taurine, and B vitamins in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Conducted over 12 months with 107 participants, the study revealed significant improvements in cognitive performance for those consuming 15g of whey protein daily compared to a placebo group. Using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) as the primary measure, the whey protein group showed a mean increase of 3.23 points versus 1.42 points in the placebo group, with a notable mean difference of 1.81 points (95% CI: 0.32–3.30). Secondary cognitive outcomes, including the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), further supported the positive findings. The intervention was well-tolerated with minimal side effects, demonstrating its safety and efficacy. This research highlights the potential of whey protein formulations rich in MFGM and key nutrients as a promising nutraceutical approach to mitigating cognitive decline in aging populations.
