A randomized placebo-controlled trial in healthy adults found that a multi-species synbiotic (probiotic strains plus Indian pomegranate extract) taken alongside a short course of antibiotics accelerated recovery of the gut microbiome and its functions. Compared with placebo, the synbiotic raised diversity of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, restored butyrate- and acetate-producing species (with large increases in fecal butyrate and acetate), greatly increased urinary Urolithin A, lowered the harmful metabolite p‑cresol sulfate, and rapidly improved gut barrier integrity early and over the study period. The product was well tolerated and may reduce antibiotic-associated gut dysfunction by promoting beneficial microbes and metabolite recovery.
