A new randomized, double-blind clinical trial published in Nutrients has found that adding 3 g of β-Hydroxy-β-Methylbutyrate (HMB) to a whey protein supplement may further improve muscle health in older adults. Researchers reported that while 40 g of whey protein significantly stimulated muscle protein synthesis in both older men and women, the addition of HMB provided an extra anabolic boost in women and reduced muscle protein breakdown in both sexes. These findings suggest that HMB may help counteract age-related anabolic resistance, a key factor contributing to muscle loss and frailty in aging populations.
The study highlights the growing potential of HMB as a functional ingredient for healthy aging and active nutrition products. By simultaneously supporting muscle building and reducing muscle breakdown, HMB could enhance the effectiveness of protein-based interventions aimed at preserving muscle mass and function in older adults, particularly women who may exhibit a blunted anabolic response to protein alone. While longer-term studies are needed to confirm impacts on muscle strength and body composition, the findings further strengthen the scientific rationale for incorporating HMB into senior nutrition formulations.
