While exotic mushrooms like Lion’s Mane gain attention, the white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) may hold immune-boosting properties. Research from the City of Hope suggests it could help slow prostate cancer progression.A previous phase I clinical trial showed that patients consuming mushroom tablets twice daily experienced reduced levels of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), which suppress immune responses. In some cases, prostate cancer markers dropped to undetectable levels. Follow-up studies in mice revealed delayed tumor growth, extended survival, and fewer suppressor cells in the blood. In an ongoing phase II trial, patients also showed increased anti-tumor immune cells. Scientists believe the extract’s combination of fibers, proteins, and phytochemicals tackles cancer through multiple pathways, though the exact mechanism remains unknown. While studies continue, researchers encourage adding white button mushrooms to daily diets as a potential complement to traditional cancer therapies.
