The demand for omega-3 fatty acids continues to surge, driven by their recognized health benefits and dietary recommendations advocating increased consumption of fatty fish. However, concerns over the sustainable production of fish oil, the primary source of EPA and DHA, present challenges to meeting this demand. Experts from the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED) and Aker BioMarine discuss the need for fish oil alternatives and the supply chain hurdles. Despite the recent authorization of the anchovy fishing season in Peru, the industry faces structural constraints on omega-3 supply. Aker BioMarine’s introduction of FloraMarine, an algae-based DHA oil, offers a promising solution. Notably, the industry’s sustainability efforts align with consumer preferences for responsibly sourced omega-3s. While research continues to uncover the diverse health benefits of omega-3s, there remains a gap between demand and supply, underscoring the importance of innovation and sustainability in meeting global omega-3 needs.
