A recent study has shed light on the dose-dependent effects of Ilex guayusa tea extract (GLE) on mood, cognitive, and motor-cognitive performance. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 25 young adults, it was found that a 600 mg dose of GLE significantly improved mood, reduced fatigue, and enhanced both motor and psychomotor speeds compared to a placebo. The 1200 mg dose also boosted psychomotor speed and motor-cognitive performance but was associated with increased jitteriness in women. Both doses elevated blood pressure by 4-5 mmHg, though neither affected the QT interval length. The study suggests that lower doses of GLE may be optimal for improving mood and cognitive functions with fewer side effects, while higher doses might be better for enhancing motor-cognitive performance.
