IFF, a company based in New York City, has achieved a significant technical breakthrough by using its patented SeaGel technology to encapsulate high viscosity liquid and semi-liquid nutritional ingredients into a plant-based, non-gelatin soft-shell capsule. Specifically, IFF has successfully encapsulated NovaSOL Curcumin and NovaSOL Curcumin/Boswellia from Aquanova AG, a German-based manufacturer of liquid colloidal formulations. This accomplishment is significant in the plant-based softgel sector, which is facing technical challenges.

According to Benjamin Roscoe, IFF’s Application Development and Innovation Manager, SeaGel technology is crucial in supporting the delivery of high-viscosity ingredients, such as liquid curcumin. SeaGel capsules are comparable to animal-derived gelatin in terms of film strength, elasticity, and performance.

Aquanova AG’s CEO, Frank Behnam, stated that their proprietary NovaSOL technology, which enhances the efficacy and application range of natural ingredients, has been seeking solutions to meet the growing consumer trend of switching to plant-based alternatives. Encapsulating NovaSOL in a vegan softgel using SeaGel is a significant milestone, and they are excited about this achievement.
