In a groundbreaking study challenging previous assumptions, licorice’s glycyrrhizic acid (GA) content, long considered safe up to 100 mg daily, is under scrutiny. The randomized, controlled 2 × 2 crossover trial, involving 28 healthy participants, reveals licorice’s unexpected potency in raising blood pressure by a mean difference of 3.1 mm Hg during the intake period. This prompts a reconsideration of licorice’s safe intake limits. The study underscores the need for further exploration of licorice’s health implications and suggests caution for individuals with licorice or GA-based supplements.
