A study published in eClinicalMedicine has confirmed that a novel natural supplement developed at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) prevents postpartum blues and reduces symptoms of postpartum depression over six months. The trial involved over 100 postpartum participants from January 2019 to December 2022, with those taking the supplement showing significant reductions in mood swings, crying spells, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping. Two-thirds of the supplement group experienced negligible symptoms of postpartum blues, and none reached the clinical threshold for postpartum depression six months after birth. The supplement, containing natural ingredients like blueberry extract and amino acids, replenishes essential neurochemicals and supports healthy mood without affecting breast milk. CAMH partnered with Exeltis to market the product as Blues Away®, with availability expected in the U.S. starting April 11, 2024, and other global markets to follow. This supplement offers a promising preventative therapy for postpartum mental health issues, though one study measure did not show the expected protective effect, potentially influenced by the pandemic.
