Sinai Health’s Blumenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, led by Dr. Ravi Retnakaran, conducted a four-year study on 306 pregnant women, exploring post-meal insulin responses and long-term metabolic health. Using glucose challenge tests, the research highlighted the importance of extended observation and understanding insulin responses in relation to glucose levels. Initially, a higher corrected insulin response (CIR) showed mixed cardiometabolic features. However, longitudinal data revealed that the highest CIR at baseline was associated with better beta-cell compensation, lower blood sugar levels, and a reduced risk of pre-diabetes or diabetes at three and five years. As continuous glucose monitoring gains popularity, the study cautions against overreliance on post-meal insulin levels for dietary choices. Dietitian Sophie Medlin expressed concerns about the expanding glucose stabilization market, emphasizing the potential for misleading messages from CGM equipment. This research contributes valuable insights into the intricate link between post-meal insulin responses and long-term metabolic health.
