A double-blind randomized controlled trial evaluated a dietary supplement’s impact on postpartum blues (PPB), which involves sadness, anxiety, and irritability around day 5 postpartum and can lead to depression. Participants from Toronto were randomly assigned to receive either the supplement (blueberry juice/extract, tryptophan, tyrosine) or a placebo between days 3 and 5 postpartum, with mood assessed on day 5. From 2019 to 2022, 103 participants completed the study. The supplement did not significantly affect induced depressed mood but did reduce PPB severity. Adverse events were comparable between groups, indicating the supplement’s moderate effectiveness in reducing PPB symptoms.
