A new animal study suggests that a milk-derived supplement rich in milk fat globule membranes (MFGMs) and extracellular vesicles (EVs) could help combat age-related metabolic dysfunction. Over 25 weeks, aged sedentary rats given the MFGM/EV concentrate — abundant in milk sphingolipids — developed healthier lipid profiles, including reductions in ceramide biomarkers tied to cardiovascular death and an overall drop in harmful fats. Researchers also observed faster turnover of lipoprotein particles and fewer triglyceride-rich particles in the bloodstream.

Whole-body lipidomic analysis revealed that the supplement also improved liver metabolic health, indicating a broad positive effect on fat metabolism. The authors say these results point to a promising, food-based approach for supporting metabolic health in older adults, particularly those unable to follow strict diets or exercise programs.
