Over three months, participants received either the carotenoid supplement or a placebo, containing a proprietary mix of tomato carotenes standardized to 10 mg total carotenoids, predominantly phytoene and phytofluene. Evaluation through measures like trans epidermal water loss and skin barrier strength demonstrated a notable enhancement in skin barrier strength after 12 weeks. Furthermore, subjects experienced significant improvements in skin firmness and elasticity, suggesting the carotenoid supplement expedites skin barrier repair by potentially influencing ceramide levels. This reinforced skin barrier contributes to enhanced hydration, smoothness, firmness, and reduced fine lines and wrinkles, according to the study.
