Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is a potential mitochondrial-supporting ingredient for aesthetic dermatology and skin aging. PQQ is a redox-active compound that may support mitochondrial function by activating CREB/PGC-1α and SIRT1-related signaling, promoting mitochondrial biogenesis, maintaining mitochondrial membrane function, and reducing oxidative stress. In skin-related experimental studies, PQQ reduced oxidative damage, DNA damage, cellular senescence, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and UV-induced inflammatory signaling, while also showing protective effects in human dermal fibroblasts and keratinocytes. These effects are relevant to skin aging because mitochondrial dysfunction can contribute to collagen degradation, impaired extracellular-matrix maintenance, inflammation, pigmentation changes, and slower skin recovery. PQQ a promising but still investigational bioactive for skin aging and mitochondrial support, with potential applications in cosmeceutical formulation.
