This functional ingredient enhances aerobic exercise performance, increasing time to exhaustion by 8.3% in men and 12.2% in women. A randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial investigated the effects of Brussels chicory juice (rich in phenolic acids) on aerobic exercise performance and post-exercise recovery in untrained college students. After 7 days of supplementation, participants showed an 8.3% (men) and 12.2% (women) increase in time to exhaustion, along with a 14.5% and 10.6% reduction in blood lactate, respectively. In vitro, phenolic acids dose-dependently promoted LDHB-mediated lactate oxidation without affecting lactate production. These findings suggest that Brussels chicory supplementation may enhance endurance and accelerate post-exercise recovery by facilitating lactate clearance.
