Hair Growth Promoting Effects of Strawberry Guava (Psidium littorale) Extract

This study evaluated the effects of oral strawberry guava (Psidium littorale) extract (SGE) on hair growth using human dermal papilla cells, and a 24-week single-arm clinical trial in individuals with hair thinning. In the clinical study, 100 mg/day of SGE increased both hair count and hair growth area after 24 weeks. The hair growth-promoting effects were attributed to multiple bioactive compounds, including adenosine, which improves scalp microcirculation, fructose, which stimulated dermal papilla cell proliferation, and digalactosyldiacylglycerol and pedunculagin, which enhanced the production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to support follicular angiogenesis and nourishment. Oral strawberry guava extract promotes hair growth by improving scalp blood flow and activating dermal papilla cells through increased VEGF production, highlighting its potential as a functional nutraceutical ingredient for supporting hair health.
