Cumin Seed Extract and Its Wound-Healing Potential

The study evaluated the wound-healing potential of methanolic extract of cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) seeds and examined how it supports tissue repair. Cumin extract significantly accelerated wound contraction and closure, accompanied by greater formation of collagen fibers and fibroblasts and fewer inflammatory cells in the healing tissue. It also increased TGF-β1, an important factor involved in fibroblast activity, myofibroblast formation, tissue remodeling, and new blood-vessel development, suggesting improved progression of the repair process. Cumin further enhanced the wound’s antioxidant defense by increasing superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) while reducing malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of lipid peroxidation and oxidative damage. In addition, increased hydroxyproline, an indicator of collagen synthesis, was associated with improved wound closure. Cumin seed extract promotes wound repair through enhanced collagen synthesis, fibroblast activity, tissue remodeling, angiogenesis, and protection against oxidative stress, highlighting C. cyminum as a promising plant-derived ingredient for topical wound-healing.
