A new Australian clinical study suggests that oleoylethanolamide (OEA) supplementation may stimulate the body’s natural production of GLP-1, opening a potential nutritional approach to appetite and metabolic health. In a single-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study involving 43 overweight and obese adults, a 300 mg dose of OEA increased serum GLP-1 levels within just 15 minutes, with concentrations approximately 20–25% higher than placebo. The same dose also produced a significant increase in GIP, while the elevated GLP-1 response persisted after a subsequent meal.
OEA is an endocannabinoid-like lipid naturally produced following digestion of oleic acid and is associated with reduced food intake and fat-mass regulation. The study used TRPTI OEA, formulated with the Lipisperse delivery system to improve bioavailability. The findings add to emerging research positioning OEA as a potential ingredient for GLP-1-supporting, appetite-management and metabolic-health formulations, although larger and longer-term studies are needed to establish sustained weight-management benefits.
