Probiotic Improves Vagal Function in Depression

In a randomized trial, a multi-species probiotic improved vagus nerve activity in patients with major depression after 3 months. Benefits included better heart rate variability, improved sleep, and increased beneficial gut bacteria such as Akkermansia muciniphila. Results suggest probiotics may support gut–brain communication and mental health.
