Vitamin D in Diabetes: Uncovering the Sunshine Hormone’s Role in Glucose Metabolism and Beyond

Vitamin D may support glucose homeostasis by regulating genes involved in insulin secretion and insulin action through the vitamin D receptor (VDR), while modulating immune responses and reducing inflammation that contributes to pancreatic islet, liver, and muscle dysfunction. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with an increased incidence of type 2 diabetes, and correcting deficiency may slow disease progression in some patients. However, large-scale clinical trials have not consistently demonstrated that vitamin D supplementation improves type 2 diabetes outcomes, and evidence supporting its role in preventing type 1 diabetes remains insufficient. Further research is needed to establish optimal vitamin D levels and clarify its cell-specific mechanisms and potential role in diabetes prevention and management.
