A breakthrough mouse-model study reveals the cognitive-boosting potential of Phaeodactylum tricornutum (PT), a microalgae extract rich in fucoxanthin. Researchers found that PT, containing 2% fucoxanthin, significantly enhanced cognitive function and countered age-related mental decline. Through a randomized trial on 72 male mice, different doses of PT extract (branded as BrainPhyt) were administered, showing dose-response effects. Notably, higher doses notably improved spatial cognitive function, swim latency, and memory, while reducing oxidative stress and inflammation markers. This research underscores PT’s neuroprotective abilities, attributed to its nutrient-rich composition. The study advocates for sustainable microalgae cultivation to harness bioactive compounds for combating cognitive decline.
