PHGG and Guar Gum: Emerging Clinical Benefits for the Gut

Guar fiber, including guar gum and its enzymatically broken-down form, partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG) is emerging as a versatile, gut-friendly ingredient. A narrative review of human studies finds that these water‑soluble fibers reliably improve common gastrointestinal complaints such as constipation and diarrhea, and can beneficially reshape the gut microbiota. Early research also links guar fiber to positive effects along the gut‑brain axis, suggesting potential for easing disorders like irritable bowel syndrome. Preliminary data hint at benefits for fatty liver disease, but clinical confirmation is still needed. Overall, PHGG shows the strongest and most consistent evidence for digestive health, while other indications remain promising but under‑studied.
