A recent study has found that Nutroxsun®, a proprietary blend of rosemary and grapefruit extracts, may offer significant protection against UV-induced skin damage when taken orally. Traditionally, topical sunscreens have served as the primary defense against ultraviolet radiation (UVR), but this research adds to growing evidence that nutritional strategies can also play a key role. The study, which included both in vitro and human trials, examined Nutroxsun’s impact on oxidative stress, inflammation, and structural skin proteins. In cell-based models, the supplement reduced the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lowered levels of proinflammatory interleukins (IL-1, IL-6, and IL-8). It also preserved procollagen I and elastin and decreased the secretion of MMP-1 and MMP-3, enzymes involved in collagen breakdown.

In a placebo-controlled, randomized crossover trial involving 20 volunteers with fair to light skin (phototypes I-III), Nutroxsun® was tested at daily doses of 100 mg and 200 mg. Results showed a significant reduction in UV-induced erythema skin redness caused by sun exposure from the very first day of intake, with faster recovery times.
