Inulin–Oligofructose Blend Improves Bowel Function, Mood, and Quality of Life in Constipation-Predominant IBS

A randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial demonstrated that daily supplementation with a 50/50 blend of inulin and oligofructose (9.2 g/day for 8 weeks) significantly improved bowel symptoms, mood, and quality of life in individuals with constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C). Participants receiving the prebiotic showed a marked increase in IBS-Quality of Life scores and a reduction in IBS-Symptom Severity, alongside notable relief in constipation and psychological well-being compared to placebo. These findings suggest that inulin-based prebiotic therapy can beneficially modulate gut-brain function and symptom burden in IBS-C patients.
