A new study highlights the potential of Pleurotus eryngii mushroom fermentation supernatant (FS-PEWS) in safeguarding intestinal health. Using an in vitro Caco-2 cell model and ex vivo colonic biopsies, researchers found that FS-PEWS counteracted sodium deoxycholate (SDC)-induced gut barrier damage by restoring key tight junction proteins ZO-1 and claudin-1. The supernatant also reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β, while modulating immune pathways like TLR-4 and dectin-1. These findings suggest FS-PEWS could be a promising intervention for gut barrier dysfunction and inflammation linked to microbial metabolite disturbances.
