Pyromeconic acid enriched water extract of Erigeron annuus has been evaluated for its potential as a topical cosmetic ingredient targeting itch relief and skin inflammation. Using human mast cells (HMC-1) and keratinocytes (HaCaT), the extract and its key active compound pyromeconic acid significantly reduced histamine release, a primary trigger of itching, and suppressed pro-inflammatory cytokines including IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and IFN-γ. It also lowered oxidative stress by reducing intracellular reactive oxygen species and enhancing antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase, helping protect skin cells from damage. In inflammation induced skin models, the treatment further decreased chemokines like TARC and MDC and supported skin barrier function by improving the expression of barrier-related proteins. Pyromeconic acid enriched Erigeron annuus extract effectively alleviates itch, reduces inflammation, and supports skin barrier integrity, highlighting its strong potential as a functional ingredient in cosmetic and dermatological formulations
