The effects of taurine supplementation on diabetes mellitus in humans: A systematic review and meta-analysis

A meta-analysis of five randomized controlled trials involving 209 participants found that taurine supplementation significantly improved glycemic control in diabetic patients, reducing HbA1c (SMD −0.41), fasting blood sugar (SMD −1.28), and HOMA-IR (SMD −0.64). Reductions in insulin and triglyceride levels were also observed but did not reach statistical significance. Taurine showed no significant effects on serum lipids overall, blood pressure, or body composition. These findings suggest that taurine may support glucose regulation and insulin sensitivity in diabetic patients, although further clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy.
