Pregnant individuals living with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) face an elevated risk of severe pregnancy complications, including gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and preterm birth. To see if a popular dietary supplement could lower these risks, researchers conducted a rigorous, placebo-controlled clinical trial testing daily myo-inositol supplementation started early in pregnancy.
Despite widespread interest in its potential protective benefits, the study found that taking myo-inositol daily provided no significant reduction in pregnancy complications compared to a standard folic acid placebo. The rates of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and early delivery remained virtually identical between both groups, suggesting that myo-inositol is not an effective preventive treatment for high-risk pregnancies associated with PCOS.
