The popular antimalarial drug artemether-lumefantrine (AL) relies heavily on dietary fat to be properly absorbed by the body. Because acute malaria often leaves patients too sick or nauseous to eat a heavy meal, researchers tested how much fat is actually required for the drug to work effectively.
In a study of healthy volunteers given varying amounts of soya milk, taking AL with fat boosted absorption more than fivefold. Crucially, maximum absorption didn’t require a large meal just 36 ml of soya milk (about 1.2 grams of fat) was enough to achieve 90% of the drug’s full effect.
