Topical Probiotic Formulations Using Alginate Microspheres

The study develops a topical formulation containing alginate microspheres loaded with the probiotic strain Lactobacillus casei ATCC 393 and evaluates how it interacts with the skin environment in vitro. The probiotic showed strong activity against Staphylococcus aureus, a common skin pathogen, while remaining compatible with beneficial Staphylococcus epidermidis. The microsphere system was non toxic to human keratinocytes and fibroblasts and supported high cell viability. In a wound-healing model, it improved cell migration, suggesting potential benefits for skin repair. Overall, the work shows that probiotic-loaded microspheres can deliver live bacteria in a stable, skin-friendly way and may help restore microbial balance and support barrier recovery.
