The New Zealand government is set to introduce a new standalone bill to regulate natural products, replacing outdated laws from the 1980s. No decisions on the bill’s scope have been made yet, with the Ministry of Health planning stakeholder engagement before proceeding. The Natural Health Products New Zealand (NHPNZ) hopes the new regulation will boost exports, potentially doubling the sector’s current $650 million total. Alongside this, the industry is pushing for more flexible export regulations, as the current system requires pre-approval for food exports, which is seen as stifling growth. Four options are under consideration, with NHPNZ advocating for practical exemptions to enhance international trade. The previous Therapeutic Products Act, which was criticized for being overly bureaucratic, has been repealed, and the new bill is expected to streamline natural product regulations.
