A new study highlights Salvia officinalis (sage) standardized to 4% rosmarinic acid and rutin as a potent nootropic duo. Among nine botanical extracts tested in vitro, sage showed the strongest neuroprotective effects by reducing oxidative stress, enhancing cell survival, and boosting BDNF, with rutin further amplifying BDNF and AChE activity. A 12-week clinical trial in 121 adults (50-65 years) with mild cognitive impairment found that while all groups improved, the higher dose (400 mg) significantly enhanced memory recall and abstract reasoning beyond placebo. Cognitive assessments (MoCA, ADAS-Cog) confirmed both doses improved global cognitive function, demonstrating this blend’s potential for cognitive health.
