A 12-week randomized, placebo-controlled trial tested 200 mg/day of Oligonol (lychee fruit extract) for its impact on abdominal fat. Results showed a significant reduction in visceral fat area (VFA) in the Oligonol group (from 98.2 ± 30.3 cm² to 95.1 ± 29.6 cm²), while the placebo group saw an increase (95.4 ± 31.8 cm² to 98.6 ± 33.1 cm²), leading to a net difference of 6.1 cm². No meaningful changes were observed in total fat area, subcutaneous fat, fat mass, or other physical measures. Since diet and activity levels remained stable, the effect was attributed to Oligonol, which is thought to stimulate fat burning by enhancing mitochondrial β-oxidation through PPAR-alpha activation and lowering perilipin expression, thereby increasing lipolysis an effect more pronounced in visceral fat cells due to their higher mitochondrial content.
