Cranberry has gained attention regarding its health-promoting properties, linked with its (poly)phenolic and oligosaccharide content. However, the potential modulation of the gut microbiota by cranberry extract on the human-health axis is poorly established. The study investigated the short-term clinical effects of a commercial cranberry extract (Prebiocran™) on the gut microbiome of 28 healthy subjects, showing a bifidogenic effect and an increase of butyrate-producing bacteria, accompanied by an alteration of the short-chain fatty acid profiles in subjects’ faeces. It also demonstrated that Prebiocran™ has a prebiotic effect linked to an individualised answer from the gut microbiota; for example, Prevotella-rich microbiotas showed a specific benefit of cranberry extract.
