This review evaluates clinical evidence on red clover (Trifolium pratense), particularly its isoflavone-rich commercial extracts, in alleviating menopausal symptoms. Drawing from eight randomized controlled trials involving 8,769 women aged 40–65, the review finds consistent benefits across multiple health domains. Most notably, red clover isoflavone supplementation reduced vasomotor symptoms especially hot flashes with significant improvements in mood and sleep quality. Meta-analyses also report favorable changes in lipid profiles, including reductions in total cholesterol, and improvements in vascular health markers like endothelial function. Mechanistically, the isoflavones’ estrogen like activity preferentially binding ER-β along with antioxidant and tyrosine kinase inhibitory properties, are likely drivers of these effects. The extracts were generally well tolerated, though potential interactions (e.g., with blood thinners, hormonal therapies) warrant caution . In conclusion, red clover isoflavone products demonstrate significant therapeutic potential for menopausal women.
