Effect of Multinutrient Supplementation on Vitamin B12 Status in Healthy Vegans: A Randomized Controlled Trial

In a double-blind, randomized controlled trial involving 72 healthy vegan adults, four months of multinutrient supplementation was evaluated for its effect on nutritional biomarkers. After adjustment for baseline values, age, sex, and multiple testing, supplementation led to significant improvements in vitamin B12–related markers, including serum vitamin B12, holotranscobalamin, flavin adenine dinucleotide, and the combined B12 status indicator, while no significant changes were observed in vitamin A, beta-carotene, folate, choline, osteocalcin markers, or related biomarkers. These findings indicate that a multinutrient supplement providing 82 µg of vitamin B12 per day effectively improves vitamin B12 status in healthy vegans.
