New research confirms that DHA (22:6n-3) and ARA (20:4n-6) supplementation in infant nutrition plays a crucial role in cognitive development. A meta-analysis of nine randomized controlled trials (1039 infants) found that the ideal DHA/ARA ratio of 0.5–1 significantly enhances mental and psychomotor development. While general DHA and ARA supplementation showed promising cognitive benefits, the most notable improvements in brain function occurred when DHA/ARA levels were optimized within this range.
