This 1-month randomized, open-label clinical trial conducted in Cork, Ireland, evaluated the safety and tolerability of a Lactobacillus probiotic combined with herbal extracts in healthy volunteers and patients with asthma. Participants consumed the blend twice daily. The primary outcome of safety was met, with no adverse events reported. Asthmatic participants showed improvements in lung function (FEV) and increased serum short-chain fatty acids, alongside stabilization of gut microbiome architecture. A significant reduction in the relative abundance of Escherichia coli was observed. Findings suggest this probiotic-herbal blend may positively influence the gut–lung axis, warranting larger placebo-controlled studies.
