Arginine Emerges as a Promising Low-Cost Candidate in Alzheimer’s Research

A new study published in Neurochemistry International unveils a breakthrough in the search for safer and more accessible Alzheimer’s disease (AD) treatments. Researchers from Kindai University report that oral arginine—a naturally occurring amino acid—can effectively suppress amyloid β (Aβ) aggregation, a key driver of AD pathology. While current antibody-based therapies target Aβ, their limited effectiveness, high cost, and immune-related side effects highlight the urgent need for alternatives. In both Drosophila and mouse models of AD, arginine significantly reduced amyloid plaque burden, lowered insoluble Aβ42 levels, and improved behavioral outcomes. The treatment also dampened neuroinflammation, suggesting broader neuroprotective effects beyond aggregation control. Because arginine is clinically safe, inexpensive, and readily available, researchers propose it as a strong candidate for drug repositioning.
