Thymol and carvacrol, key terpenoids found in herbs such as thyme and oregano, have emerged as potent activators of cellular autophagy and mitophagy—mechanisms essential for maintaining metabolic balance and delaying aging. By transiently reducing mitochondrial membrane potential, these compounds trigger protective cellular cleanup processes that enhance mitochondrial quality control. In preclinical models, thymol supplementation prevented liver fat accumulation in diet-induced obesity, improved stress resilience, and preserved muscle function while slowing epigenetic aging. These findings position thymol-rich botanicals as promising nutritional interventions for promoting metabolic health and extending healthspan through autophagy modulation.
