Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Nephelium lappaceum Peel Extract and Geraniin on Irritated Skin

The clinical study evaluated Nephelium lappaceum (rambutan) peel extract, rich in the ellagitannin geraniin for its ability to protect the skin against inflammation induced by external irritants. The extract was investigated using in vitro cell-based models exposed to UV radiation, infrared (IR), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and retinoic acid (RA), followed by human clinical evaluation. The extract and geraniin significantly suppressed the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-1α, TNF-α, and IL-8, through modulation of the NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways. Clinical findings further showed that topical application reduced transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and erythema after exposure to environmental and chemical irritants, indicating improved skin barrier function and reduced irritation. Nephelium lappaceum peel extract with geraniin as its major bioactive compound, is a promising natural cosmetic ingredient for protecting the skin from external stressors, reducing inflammation, and supporting skin barrier integrity.
