Salvia miltiorrhiza Extract Shows Superior Benefits Over Saw Palmetto for Men’s Urinary Health

A new randomized pilot study published in the journal MDPI Nutrients found that Salvia miltiorrhiza extract (SAGX) may provide greater benefits than saw palmetto for men experiencing lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). In the 12-week study, 30 men received either 400 mg of SAGX or 320 mg of saw palmetto daily. Participants supplemented with SAGX showed significantly greater improvements in overall urinary symptoms, storage symptoms such as urgency and frequency, and LUTS-related quality of life compared with the saw palmetto group.

The study also reported significant improvements in erectile function among men taking SAGX, while maintaining a favorable safety profile with only mild and transient adverse events. Although larger studies are needed to confirm these findings, the results suggest that Salvia miltiorrhiza extract could emerge as a promising evidence-based botanical ingredient for supporting prostate and urinary health in aging men.
