Beta-Alanine: A Potential Brain Boost for Older Adults

Could a common amino acid help sharpen the aging mind? A recent 10-week study suggests that β-alanine (BA) supplementation might improve cognitive function and mood in older adults.
Researchers followed 100 participants, average age 71, who took either 2.4 grams of β-alanine or a placebo daily. They underwent memory, attention, and mood tests including the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) before, during, and after the trial.
While overall results showed no major differences between groups, participants with below-normal cognitive scores at the start posted significant gains after taking BA —with 13.6% improvement by mid-study and 11.8% at 10 weeks. They also reported reduced depressive symptoms, though no clear changes appeared in physical strength or anxiety levels.
These findings hint that β-alanine could help support cognitive function and emotional well-being in older adults, especially those beginning to notice memory lapses or mental sluggishness. More research will confirm whether this simple supplement can truly keep the aging brain in peak condition.
