Application of Plant Derived Pectins in Moisturizing Formulations: Passiflora ligularis Pectin

The study focuses on extracting pectins from the fruit of Passiflora ligularis and evaluating their potential use as a natural moisturizing ingredient in cosmetic formulations. The researchers optimized the extraction process to obtain pectin with good purity and stability, then characterized it using physicochemical and structural analyses. They found that the extracted pectin has strong water-binding and film-forming properties, which make it suitable for improving skin hydration when incorporated into cosmetic prototypes. The formulations containing this pectin created a moisture-retaining layer on the skin, helping reduce dryness and enhancing softness. The key functional bioactive in this work is the Passiflora ligularis pectin itself; it is the central ingredient responsible for the moisturizing effect, rather than a mixture of multiple actives. The study highlights its promise as a plant-derived, biodegradable alternative to synthetic moisturizers and suggests that fruit-based pectins can enhance hydration performance in skincare products.
