A new study highlights the benefits of shatavari (Asparagus racemosus, Ar) and ashwagandha (Withania somnifera, Ws) for postmenopausal health. In a 24-week double-blind, randomized trial, women receiving 250 mg or 500 mg of these standardized extracts experienced significant improvements in menopausal symptoms, vascular function, and bone health compared to placebo. Supplementation reduced menopause-related discomfort (MENQOL scores) and improved vascular function (reflection index). Additionally, women saw lower bone turnover markers (CTx, BAP, RANKL) and increased osteoprotegerin, supporting bone strength. The study also revealed a reduction in inflammation and oxidative stress, with decreased hs-CRP and MDA levels and increased glutathione and nitric oxide. These findings suggest that daily supplementation with Ws or Ar extracts offers a natural, effective approach to managing menopause, supporting bone, cardiovascular, and metabolic health.
